CHAPTER 3: MEMBERS OF CHRIST (part 1)

“Know ye not that are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”—1 Cor. iii. 16.

We have been trying to understand something of that new order of creation into which God lifts us in Baptism, that newness which is ours in Christ; we have found in it a new status, in that we are no longer merely the creatures of God but His sons; new being, resulting from that birth from above and from our union with the eternal Son; new life, flowing from that relationship to God.

In all this we are related to the transcendent Father and to the heavenly Christ into Whose being we are subsumed that, in the awe-inspiring thought of S. Augustine, we may become Him. But our relationship is not only with the transcendent God but also with God immanent; if God takes us into Himself He also enters into us by the Holy Spirit, and it is that Spirit of Whom we now need to think.
